After reading this post, I watched the Mythbusters segment. Coggs, your recollection is completely out to lunch, almost 180 degrees wrong. nwas, you were closer, but the fuel economy performance increase was far from linear (it may have appeared to be a linear change between tests, but they weren't changing the distance linearly). They also never did a test at 3 feet, so it's hard to say what the figure would have been. They got the best improvement at 10 feet, then it got worse at 2 feet, which may be attributed to either turbulent air or throttle modulation, or a combination of both.
Actual numbers:
control 32mpg
100' 35.5mpg (infinite distance decrease, 11% fuel decrease)
50' 38.5mpg (1/2 the distance, 9% fuel decrease)
20' 40.5mpg (2/5 the distance, 5% fuel decrease)
10' 44.5mpg (1/2 the distance, 10% fuel decrease)
2' 41mpg (1/5 the distance, 8% fuel increase)
The bottom line is, if you draft then do it between 50 and 100 feet, for the best compromise between safety and savings. The gain from 50' is minimal, and the danger increase is exponential.
