In my college days I had a Honda 250 Scrambler, which was an on/off road bike that moved me around campus OK, but on the Xway was a grunt to get up to speed. I tried drafting a semi. Once. By feel. The turbulence was tremendous until I got about 10 feet off the bumper, then I need to hit the brakes to keep from getting sucked into the bumper. I rode it out at about 70 behind that bumper for 20min or so. It was cold and I wanted to get home. It was stupid, I knew it, I was a kid. Then I chose to back off and never go back.
With that knowledge, I 'drafted' semi's in my Saabs quite a bit after that. It was amazing the tug you can get from 100-50 ft back. Pulls you into a pass.
All said, it is noticable the better milage I get when traveling in high traffic vs none. 1-4mpg less with no traffic. Not necessarily semis.
Speaking of mpg, I miss my 9000 manuals. I got at least 5mpg better in town. And probably 2-4hwy. Definitely got better mpg in hills without cruise control. Got less tickets with.
