My suggestion is GET RID OF AT&T DSL!!!!!!!
I had it for a year, hated it, really hated it, complained about it, spent half of my time checking my connection speed at
http://www dot speedtest dot net
and came to this conclusion: I was paying for the 3MB service. My speed would rarely get above 1MB, most of the time hanging around 0.8MB.
The other half of the time I spent on the TELEPHONE with the friggin AT&T operators (usually in singapore or india... often i'd ask for an AMERICAN operator...).
we would go thru crap like checking the startup/boot items (msconfig), then rebooting, then scandisking, then defragging, then rebooting, then fiddling with the router....
I had an epiphany, a moment of enlightenment, when the AT&friggin T tech support told me that as long as the speed was between 1.0 and 1.5 there was nothing wrong!
WTF??!!! I WAS PAYING FOR 3.0 AND THEY SAID THAT 1.5 WAS ACCEPTABLE? REALLY? RECEIVING ONLY HALF OF WHAT YOU PAY FOR WAS ACCEPTABLE TO AT&SORRY-A$$ T. That's like buying a brand new SAAB, and not getting an engine or transmission!
My solution was tell AT&T to go pack sand. got rid of the sorry internet thru the phone line... and went (back) to comcast cable modem.
i have never been happier...
except the time I was driving triple digits in my '87 900T convertible with the roof down... now that was fun! :-)
(end of rant)
