Maybe Tires do not go bad in a few years ... I don't have a lot professional expertise with rubber products. I can only go by what I read from various tire industry sources. I do agree that these sources say that UV radiation will age a tire faster. Since you mention the tirerack quote, I recalled they have an comprehensive article on the subject. Link Attached.
This excerpt sums up where I am coming from:
"Environmental conditions like exposure to sunlight and coastal climates, as well as poor storage and infrequent use, accelerate the aging process. In ideal conditions, a tyre may have a life expectancy that exceeds ten years from its date of manufacture. However, such conditions are rare."
I think it is important to acknowledge that there are many factors that affect tire life, and that it is not possible to accurately calculate a life based on the levels of these factors. Dave and all of us have to consider this as we care for our cars. My thoughts in the prior post were that it is likely Dave's Viggen’s tires are a few years old already, and he should consider what another 3 years of sitting around might do to their useful life. It might not be worth the effort to preserve the tires by putting the car on stands.
I think what you are saying is that I should not have judged Dave's tire situation, as they might be only 2 months old at this point. There I can agree with you. The owner of the car has the responsibility to gather the facts a make a judgment on the safe useful life of his tires.
From the tire rack article, I gather that the best way to extend the life of a tire is to use it periodically, but between uses un-mount it from the rim, and store it in a cool dry dark climate controlled place away from salt air. For most of us that is impractical, so we can only do some of those things and then we have to make an educated guess on the tire life, and hopefully we replace the tire before finding out exactly how long its life was while driving down the interstate.
