I think ground is the safest bet Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Fri, 23 Dec 2011 11:47:37 In Reply to: Ground is ok too., sondeen [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 23 Dec 2011 10:38:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
and I would also tend to have irrational worries about stuff like stressing the aluminum metal you mention in rock-climbing equipment, but can you really blame those people who aren't engineers? I mean, it is a safety item. If anything, manufacturers can take advantage of people who don't understand such technicalities in order to sell them more of them. I don't like the idea of that, but it's likely the truth.
Onto your point about a properly jacked up vehicle not suffering any stress, as much as I believe what you say about metal only being stressed when jacked up and down but not in the rest state (i.e. on the ground or up top) I'm still concerned over the car being in the jacked up position for a long time simply because I'm going by what I know: I know cars are meant to be on four wheels for a long time. What I don't know is if they can be supported by the jacking points for a long time. They may or may not be, I just don't know so my best bet is to go with what is known. Maybe the metal itself in one particular spot or region isn't stressed, but the frame and car as a whole might be...I just don't know. Again, I'm going with what's safest.
But, onto more important issues...there is great room for our error in the jacking process that would be much more detrimental than anything else and can be easily avoided by accepting possible 'flat spotting' and leaving it on the ground.
You didn't mention anything about the suspension, only the tires. Do you know anything more technical about what people always seem to talk about on 'saving the suspension' during the storage period? I believe in knowing things for what they are rather than speculate or have irrational worries.
