You can do a rental with unlimited miles that isn't bad pricewise if you return it to the renting location. Shop for this, as rates will vary. I looked at this a couple years ago and it was surprisingly cheap for a two-week trip.
You buy something new and you'll have register and insure it, take the hit on depreciation and make payments on a vehicle that may be too big for your everyday needs once the big trip is over. With a rental you have road service and a replacement vehicle should something break or there's an accident. And most rentals tend to be fairly new, and you can do some picking and choosing. If the rental doesn't have a DVD player for the urchins you can get one of the portables at Wally World or Best Buy.
If you want to buy something, it may be better to spend your money on something that's more practical on a day to day basis, unless you plan to do other long road trips.
