I did a double-take when you said fuel economy is (only) 20% worse than the 9-5... then I realized you're referring to the diesel... if so, that's bad! we have friends with the non-diesel + it's fuel economy is poo (close to half that of the 9-5 on the highway)... and it's the same age as our 9-5 and is falling apart...
like you say, I was amazed by the lack of space. I'm not sure it will even fit the width of a sheet of plywood on the floor (plastic around wheel wells get in the way iirc). Most long minivans can do that... one of the fallacies about SUVs hauling more is that you can fill it to the ceiling - sure if you have a rear seat barrier + don't mind seeing out your rear-view. Otherwise, they haul the same as a wagon with the same footprint (which also is just a bit more than a sedan, the main advantage being convenience of loading + a big mouth for occasional washing machines etc)...
