Check out the Sumitomo HTR-ZIII, the reviews are surprisingly good. I picked up a set of these (225/45/17) two summers ago for my '01 9-3 after one of my previous tires got a huge bulge in the sidewall. I also noticed that wear on those tires had been uneven despite my efforts to rotate them, including the infamous cupping on the inside rears.
Like you, I then accidentally let my tires go far too long without rotating them...to the tune of 20k miles. The fronts are now about half worn while the rears are at about 80% - but the wear appears to be fairly even, and there is no rear cupping! I credit this to the solid inner rib, which was one of the reasons I chose the tires in the first place.
I'll be mounting these again soon, and granted I do have some concerns with the front-to-back wear like you did, but I'm pleased with the amount of total miles that it looks like I'll be able to get out of these tires.
As for actual driving impressions, the previous set of tires I'd owned had much thicker sidewalls, so at first these seemed cushy by comparison, but they feel pretty stable in corners. They're also quiet at highway speeds. One thing I did experience (as noted in online reviews) is that they will squeal very loudly if you push them too hard. I've only had that happen once, but if you were autocrossing I could see it possibly being a problem. Overall though, I've been pretty happy with them!
Hope this helps.
