So my old lawn tractor finally gave up the ghost after 15 years of use and abuse. I bought a new one and now have to figure out how to defeat one of lawn tractors' most annoying "safety features."

There's a switch that prevents the lawn mower from mowing in reverse. This stupid and annoying "feature" is presumably so the operator doesn't inadvertently drive over small children, dogs, cats and other vermin. It was easily defeated on the old tractor by disconnecting one wire. On the new one a "safety" interlock is built into the ignition switch. To mow in reverse, one has to turn the key to a different position and hold it there (it is spring loaded) while reversing. This makes mowing some sections of my yard more difficult and is an absolute nuisance. Next they'll install reversing alarms and back up cameras.

I'll find a way around it, but still...

That companies, governments or whatever have this perpetual need to protect us from ourselves makes me crazy. We see these kinds of things everywhere. Whatever happened to personal responsibility and common sense? I know some of this is driven by court cases won by bloodsucking personal injury lawyers and sheep-like juries who are afraid of their own shadows, but that just makes it worse and is no excuse.

I never worried about running over my kids. Even when they were little they didn't want anything to do with the tractor--unless I let them drive it. I told them to stay where I could see them and they did. And the dogs won't go near it anyway.

And if any of you know how to bypass this stupid feature on a Husqvarna tractor, let me know.
