I remember, in 1962, my father buying a new Rambler which came with TWO outside mirrors (unlike the 1950 Studebaker Champion he was replacing), and I remember him wondering why anyone could possibly need a mirror on the right side because, he said, "You can only look in one place at a time." ;)
Cameras are not meant to replace mirrors and head turning; they're meant to supplement them. Every car has a blind spot immediately behind it, below the line of sight, an area which is very large in some vehicles; cameras show this area. No matter how much you crane your neck or adjust your mirrors, you still cannot see anything near your rear bumper.
My newer car has a backup camera, and I find it valuable. Backing out of a space in a busy lot, for example, I check the camera for near objects, then look over my shoulder for a wider view and to start backing up. Once I'm about half way out of the space, I switch back to the camera which has a better, wider view of up-coming pedestrians than I can see with my head cranked. My head and three mirrors combined have a wider view, but that requires looking in four places; the camera lets me look in lots of places at one time.
