I agree it is good to do a circle check before setting off + to use one's mirrors effectively... but I think the main use of this feature is in very large vehicles, where it might be hard to see a small child if they ran behind the car after you got in. I know of some second hand stories of parents who drove over their kid, and even if it works in a few cases, it's probably worthwhile (like the husquavarna)... I don't think they are a panacea though... the angle of view was very odd in the Acadia, and it obviously didn't pick up things in the massive side blindspots... earlier trucks had bigger greenhouses than most of these modern SUV's + that is a contributing factor... these things are deadly for cyclists - would be fine if the drivers were super attentive, but there are plenty of them that are among the most distracted drivers out there... the driving engagement with those things is awful, so no wonder...
as a side topic... I could argue that ABS is not vastly dissimilar. If everyone actually learned to threshold brake properly, good non-ABS brakes are better. I have 2 c900's: a 1989, and a 1993. The new one has ABS the old one, no... I vastly prefer driving the 1989 in winter, it stops faster, I can manage the grip + steer, and I have the option to lockup if that is preferable for the conditions (eg deeper snow), whereas I don't in the 1993. And it's not new vs old ABS... The 1993's ABS works very nicely even compared to most modern cars, and I'd rather drive the 1989 than our 9-5 in winter also (it stops better among other things)...
that said, I would agree that on a population basis, statistically, ABS saves lives... I bet backup cameras do to - in large vehicles - Imho a backup camera would be useless in eg a Miata... sanity should prevail!
