I've heard mixed stuff about Windows 8 compatibility, so I wouldn't count on that.
Win7 is no more or less compatible in 32-bit or 64-bit versions IME. In both flavors you have the option of running things in compatibility mode, and in both flavors you get mixed results. If for-sure XP compatibility is a requirement, I'd probably look to running a virtual XP machine under Windows 7 64-bit. It's free to do given you already own the XP license. The only issue I've experienced in this situation - which may be importance to you - is that USB dongles/keys don't always pass through correctly to a virtual machine. If your CAD software requires a hardware key, ensure there is Win7 support for that key before committing. ;)
