"Vista and 7 are just glorified versions of XP".

That's the impression that I have, and why I'm asking here. I have W7 on a machine at work and while it crashes a lot less, it still crashes occasionally and I have not been able to keep my wallpaper picture on it for more than a day - a minor issue, but a blatant flaw showing.

I've been reading about W8 and it seems that they need to put it out for wide release very soon to hit Xmas sales; many note that it will be defective, but will be fixed "post production".
