If you're willing to be very, very frustrated for a while, you might want
to try one of the newer Linux distributions, i.e. Fedora or Ubuntu.
The upside is stability, security, and a chance to learn something new that might
help at work or school in the future. LibreOffice handles most lightweight
Office work, and MPlayer will play most videos. Downsides are the current
trend to use experimental user interfaces (Gnome3 and Unity), and you
can't play Netflix streamed movices (although DVDs play fine), or PC
Games.
Just a thought. If you don't like it after a week or two, wipe it
and start over with Windows 7, which isn't that bad.
(Resisting the temptation to launch into car/operating system analogies)
