Unscientific test of penetrants to remove rusty nuts. Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Mon, 28 Jan 2013 10:48:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had six rusty nuts to remove on my wife's 1998 Accord V6 catalytic converter, so I thought I would do my own test of penetrating oils (well, just two). I checked all six nuts, and none would budge, at least none would budge with as much torque as I could generate flat on my back underneath the car with it on jack stands. On one end of the cat, I squirted Kroil (Aero Kroil, to be specific), tapped the nuts, waited a minute and tried removing them. All three came loose, with a crack, with what I would call a moderate amount of force on an 18 inch breaker bar, say around 60-80 ft-lbs. Next, I made up a 50% acetone, 50% transmission oil mixture, put it in one of those pump-type oil cans and did the same procedure. I got the esentially the same results,or maybe 10 ft-lbs less.
I had seen other tests on the Internet (so it's got to be true, right?) claiming that the acetone/transmission oil mixture was twice as effective as Kroil and three times more effective than PB-Blaster. Well, the acetone/oil mixture does work, but it is really not fun to be squirting acetone around in tight quarters without wearing goggles.
The Kroil is handier in an aerosol can, easer to control and less hazardous to use, so I think I'll stick with it. However the acetone/oil mix is certainly cheap, and if cost overrides safety, have at it.
