I have a set of el-cheapo home depot polycarbonate safety glasses that have seen better days... they are massively scratched up and have many paint spatters on them (good to wear safety glasses painting, but that definitely ruins safety glasses - which is ok - the point of safety glasses is to protect your eyes)... anyway, I figured they were expendable in the name of science... so for fun I doused one side of these in acetone... absolutely no damage whatsoever, and this was a lot of acetone, not just a few drops... no melting, no cracking... this is just the household sort of acetone most people on the bb would have access to (which I believe contains a little bit of water)...
obviously that is just 1 data point, but I have never heard of this as a problem in real life... as I said previously, as organic solvents go, acetone is relatively innocuous, especially given its usefulness... obviously you don't want to drink, absorb, or inhale too much of it, and if you don't have decent ventilation, it's probably not great to use too much of it, but there are much more dangerous organic solvents... honestly, if you're concerned about the safety of acetone, I'd be at least as concerned about handling some of the reactants we use in polymerization reactions (eg epoxies, fiberglassing, etc), even though they are also relatively safe...
