My indy, once Saab-only, has made the leap to work on other makes. The investment in computers, code readers, monthly data subscriptions was very substantial for a 3 person shop and has caused him to raise his rates, fortunately not very much. Or at least so far.
But multiply this by all the overly technology-rich cars out there, many with up to 20 or more computers and all requiring specialized diagnostic skills and it's a disaster in waiting. Us DIY types are screwed for much more than wipers, an oil change, plugs and filters, or maybe brakes. In some BMWs the battery can't even be changed with being blessed by some computer system.
I'm no Luddite and make my living in a technology-based industry, but I don't think any of this is a step forward.
