not just evs Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Fri, 7 Jun 2013 06:51:19 In Reply to: Any remaining former Dealers with interest?, MI-Roger [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 7 Jun 2013 03:26:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I think the advantage NEVS has (vs eg Fisker) is that they plan to release cars with conventional ICE power plants along side (and in advance of) the EV models. From the presentation, they sound like they are very much "staying the course" of the old SAAB in terms of what we want: turbos, performance, connection to older SAABs aesthetics etc as a heritage... they've also bought the facilities, equipment, IP, and the platforms for the existing 9-3 and the phoenix... They just don't want to make the business mistakes of the past. We'll see how that goes, but I do like that they are at least trying to under-promise and over-perform. The excessive media attention of the last round was not helpful imho.
Anyway the initial cars will be a face lifted but otherwise similar turbo 9-3 (though imho the current face of the 9-3 is one of the best looking Saabs in a long time, better than the NG9-5 to me, but whatever - it is possible the changes are only minor). No comment on them yet re the power plant (if eg they can't use the GM engine).
EV's won't be released for at least a year, and they expect a balance between EV and ICE weighing more to ICE to start and swinging over time... the initial focus is on China for a number of reasons, primarily related to the edicts from above in that country: they want EV's, they are making it hard to buy ICE (eg lottery for the right to buy in some locales), plug in stations will be government standardized and likely to influence the rest of the world (which is not yet)...
So I can see why dealers here wouldn't be all that interested yet. Maybe a few ICE cars might make their way here in a year or 2? Certainly in Canada, the dealer network would need to be re-established... but I think the hard core Saab oriented shops would be interested... start small, see how much interest there is etc. It may not need to be contingent on having an EV centric population near by... those who need ICE could buy ICE, and at first, that would probably be the only option!
