This is what we're always puzzled about: our 9-5 wagon, for a family of four, has always seemed more than adequate, even "large," as you mentioned. In the summers we put a Thule box on the roof just to have a bit more storage for trips. Everyone's always comfortable, even on long trips.
When I'm driving the wagon, it has never seemed significantly different than our 9-5 sedan, at least in terms of manuevering, parking, etc. All of those large SUV's and even most of the crossovers, seem like lumbering behemoths. You can't really see over them in parking lots, and in the rearview, anyhow, they always have to slow down considerably on turns that the 9-5's just glide through without any body roll or extra effort.
Just for fun, park next to one of those larger Minis someday: it's higher off the ground than a 9-5!
