Hybrids work better for people who think the brake and throttle pedals are on/off switches. They work better on hilly terrain and stop-and-go traffic where they excel.
My commute is 58 miles of which is 6 is 25, 35, 45 mph zones and about ten stoplights. I travel off hours, afternoon and evening, when traffic is lighter.
Unless you reset your mph average when you think you are going 70-75 mph your average is closer high 60 mph range. Especially if you are driving in the more congested northeast. Add some big hills and fuel economy drops. My average is around 60 mph as sometimes I'm going faster, sometimes slower.
Temperature plays a big role also. Once temperatures get in the 40F range fuel economy also drops. I did a 6.5 hour out and back to Cinncy on a 25F at 65 mph I got a 35 mpg round trip average.
