My commute to work is about 80kms round trip, half 65mph hwy and half city.
On my Honda Insight, It's the highway drive into the city that kills my mileage in the morning (up to 7L/100kms) as the engine is still warming up and usually am fighting a headwind (headwinds kill mileage too, 1.4L engine works pretty hard).
Better than 5L/100kms is easy in town.
My Volvo on the same trip uses exactly twice as much gas. And needs oil changes 50% more often. And uses 50% more oil at each change. So costs are MUCH higher to operate that car.
Some real 9-5 numbers (well maintained 2001 185hp wagon, AT, 2 people, 16" tires @ 38lbs, no outside luggage):
