Right, they aren't. In the ones I've rented I find I get 35-40 at highway speeds--around 70 mph-- but I've not used one on a trip. My neighbor with a Prius V says he gets about 35-40 on a highway trip running 75. According to his car's computer, he's averaged 45 mpg overall for the 45K miles he's owned the car. On the downside, he has to drive a Prius, which is not all that much fun!
Your 35 mpg at 65 mph for a 6 hour trip is more like what everyone else sees in their 9-5s. Speed will cut mileage, so my 30 mpg at 75 matches well with your 35mpg at 65. Our 9-5 gets about 23-24 locally.
