Tire pressure wants to inflate the radial ply profile to a circular shape. The banding plies and tread resist deformation to circular shape.
Higher pressures will develop more -ve tension at the shoulders of the tread and belt separation there has always been a problem in the industry. Higher/excessive tire pressures contribute to the processes of these failures. We had many cases of this with the Saab 9-5 Aero's that came with the 225/45R-17 Pirelli PZero Rosso Asimmetrico XL. These failures also seemed to have surfaced on the rear axles strongly suggesting that the well known excess caber problems were also at play.
You cannot assume that any tire pressure that does not burst the tire is safe.
When you quote MPG's, please state wind conditions.
Note that when reading European model specs, MPG's will be referencing miles per Imperial Gallon as such vehicles are sold in the UK. We have had some high MPG reports here when SID's have been inadvertently set to MPG Imperial.
