I've noticed that with many automatic rentals... Many Asian cars in particular are geared for fuel economy and off the line performance (both sell cars). To do that with smallish NA engines with limited low end torque, they have to downshift constantly to pass or go up hills on the highway. Some even need to downshift in the lower gears around town! This does suck gas, but overall they are still pretty good for fuel. What it ruins more so is the driving experience... I can not stand them! More and more though the world is waking up to turbos and low end torque... something Saab has been doing for decades!
re Norm's great fuel economy numbers - it is true that smoother driving at moderate highway speeds is by far the best thing for fuel economy. However, time spent next to another car is dangerous, so I pass quickly, and that does demand a burst of power, but I'll take the mpg hit over driving next to another car. Most of the time in a Saab, it's just a bit more boost off the turbo. Maybe a single downshift if I really gun it... In various Asian models, double downshifts were almost the norm, and the timing of those was very erratic unless shifting manually. Some cars (eg the Forester) automatics were imho undriveable on the highway without using the manumatic mode.
I have generally gotten better than EPA numbers on the highway for Saabs and lower for other cars (non turbos). Though, not as much better as Norm, but I'm also driving faster than EPA speeds (isn't epa 55 or something?).
