It'd be great if NEVS can get things rolling, but I'm not holding my breath. Does anyone know what they have planned for distribution/dealers/servicing in the US? An electric 9-3SC could be an interesting car.
Still, just as when buying any car it comes down to what works for you.
I'm all for an EV or hybrid but it has to be something that can do everything I need. The Tesla, is perfect for most of my needs and I love the big hatch but I can't afford one. But the real deal-killer is range. I've made 3 round trips from NH to NYC (460 miles round trip) in the past 6 weeks and one to western NY (760 mi). I go to NYC again in 2 weeks. Without the infrastructure for re-charging, I could not do the western NY trip in a Tesla--I'd run out of juice over 100 miles from my destination. And while a Tesla could (possibly) get to NYC on a charge, I'd be out of juice when I got there and there's no way to charge at my daughter's apartment. Call me crazy, but even if I could afford a Tesla, I don't see having to rent something for trips when there's a new car in the driveway as making much sense.
For this kind of use, a Prius-type hybrid would work, but the Volt concept is probably better, at least until Toyota figures out how to make the Pruis pleasant to drive. GM will surely be improving the Volt technology and putting it into other cars. It will probably become as common as the hybrid systems used in Prius, C-Max, Altima, etc.
