Small cars that get great mileage can be good for around town and can work OK. Would actually work for us, but I'm not so sure I want my wife in something like a Honda Fit. While it'd be practical for her, I shudder at the thought of it in an accident with some huge SUV, of which there are far too many around where I live.
The older car thing is interesting. I think the reliability uncertainty can be addressed. My 9K has over 207K on it. I know what it's likely to need next and I maintain it. I really don't hesitate to drive it a few hundred miles, and with a bit of prep I go would cross-country in it again. My wife's 9-5 has 123K. It will need a few things in the next year, but with those done along with some PM, it is fine for long trips. As as long as a car is maintained and you think proactively and carry a few spares and tools, an older ride is a reasonable approach. Both the 9K and the 9-5 get 29-30 highway (75-85 mph).
Then I rent something modern on a biz trip, see that I'm getting 30-34 mpg highway, and that for normal driving is perfectly reasonable to drive. Then I think that maybe it's the desire to have something that has road feel, horsepower, and is fun to drive that gets in the way when I think about other cars. Fortunately I don't have to decide anytime soon.
