but most likely their injuries were not the fault of the helmets per se, right? without knowing the circumstances, one would expect that they would have fared worse had they not worn helmets, and would an airbag have been better? (ok, it's hard to fare worse than death, but I mean incur a higher impact)
I wonder too how well the airbag protects against impact with a (for lack of a better term) "pointy" object?
It is interesting to hear that these people did not collide with vehicles... were they roadies or mtb or commuter? I'm primarily a mountain biker who commutes some... I hear lots of people outside of biking (and I'm not implying that this is what you are saying) tell me how dangerous mountain biking is - that they had heard of somebody who was killed or parapalegic or whatnot from an mtb crash... basically chastising me for my "dangerous" sport (dangerous compared to obesity?)... I've never had a serious mtb crash, never really hit my head in any bike crash... never known anyone seriously hurt mtb'ing (save the odd broken arm)... but so many have been killed on roads by cars... there was another just this past month... and not just newbies... this guy was very experienced... I feel way more safe navigating some steep chunky slab of wet granite, than going from A to B around town!
