You do make some good points!
Both injuries of course were not the fault of the helmet, and probably would have been worse without the helmet. But AFAIK neither accident was particularly violent - in my totally non-expert opinion bicycle helmets are just really wimpy and don't provide much protection.
Your point about pointy objects is also a very good one - an airbag would probably perform poorly in that case. And styrofoam (the primary component of most bicycle helmets I've seen) isn't too great in that regard either. If you look at motorcycle helmets, they have styrofoam on the inside, but on the outside is a thick polycarbonate shell, which I think functions to spread out the applied force and help the soft styrofoam absorb the energy better and not break apart.
Re the accidents I referred to, the information on both is pretty limited. With the one where the guy lived, he doesn't recall the cause but he was riding on the sidewalk along a busy street and something happened that caused him to go flying over the handlebars and land headfirst in the street. Amazingly, the first car that came along in his lane saw him and stopped, otherwise he surely would have been run over - it's a very busy road where people generally drive about 45 MPH (Memorial Drive in Cambridge, MA if you happen to know the area).
The circumstances of the other accident are even less known. The guy was riding alone along the side of a road that is very lightly traveled and sparsely populated. Apparently someone nearby came out of his house and saw him lying by the side of the road. The police think somehow he fell off the bike and hit his head on a rock - as far as they could tell, no other vehicle was involved.
