The project is in an early planning phase - funding it will be an issue, in particular anything that attempts to fix the I-70 debacle from Denver to the mtns

With these projects the costs often rise dramatically from the initial projections, it's been that way with the light rail trains in the Denver area. Funds from the Feds are becoming scarcer and it seems more toll roads are in future . I'm not sure much will be done to fix I-70 until it starts to impact no of annual skier visits, then they might decide to actually do something.

Denver I think now ranks 16th in terms of avg commute times.

Fort Collins seems like the road system was planned for a city half the size. And then they have the two railroads running thru the city with multiple grade crossings.

From CDOT planning session :

"A proposed high-speed rail system from Fort Collins to DIA and then south to Colorado Springs would cost about $9.8 billion and carry roughly 13 million passengers a year, according to planners Tuesday night….

Planners said any rail corridor would have to avoid cutting through the city of Denver to scale back costs. Still, a 340-mile system that would go from Fort Collins south to DIA and south to Pueblo and include I-70 to Eagle would cost over $30 billion.

Which is why CDOT planners say phasing the project makes sense. The preferred 132-mile route from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs omits, for the time being, the I-70 west portion."
