I prefer having dedicated units for navigation, too. The smartphone also generates a lot of heat when it's being used as a GPS, corresponding to the reduced battery life.
There are two downsides to the TomTom:
- On their maps, some addresses do not exist, so it's helpful to have a phone w/ Google maps and streetview as a backup once the TomTom gets you close. It would be great if the TomTom would allow you to enter GPS coordinates.
- I've found that in some areas where intersections are close, TomTom can lead a driver astray because it thinks that it's 150 feet away from the actual location. I can be at an intersection ready to make a turn and it will tell me to turn in 250 feet. (Darned frame-dragging!)
For me, the ideal sucker-mounted GPS would incorporate Google maps and 4G to allow the user to see local traffic conditions.
