I normally feel the same way - but the iPhone with Google Maps works fine for me. I put the phone in the pop-out cup holder in my 9-5 Aero, and plug it in to the standard 12v outlet below the ACC. The charging cord keeps the phone from falling out of the cup holder, and I can position the phone so that it's easy to see without taking my eyes off the road for more than a second or two.
I don't like using the cellphone - even hands free (the only legal choice in NY State...) - in the car, so no conflict there. In these parts, anything that broadcasts even the potential existance of a GPS in a vehicle is an automatic break-in invitation - even just a suction cup thing on the windshield.
