Then I received the GPS as a gift, forced myself to use it, and was pleasantly surprised during the first trip. I have a map to view which is nearly in my line of sight AND accurate voice instructions too which alert me in advance of any upcoming turn/exit.
Well, usually accurate voice instructions.
The turning point for me was a day long trip to Defiance OH on a day with monsoon rains. The main highway between Defiance and US-23 in Toledo became submerged but locals in Defiance gave me a few tips regarding a back road that normally did not flood. The TomTom guided me back home on a network of back country farm roads, mostly paved, which were above water and too small to be found on most maps.
