Thank you! Very helpful info, I will relay it to my son. No, they are not pleased, especially since he firmly requested a loaner and told them he is not going to return it until they fix his car :) One of his associates mentioned a possible bad pin somewhere, along the same line as you suggested. But I suspect visual inspection of the wiring is not going to reveal anything so how will they know? And it is obviously very difficult to diagnose a problem when it isn't happening, but the car is unreliable in its current state. They will probably try to deny it has anything to do with disassembling the entire engine... very frustrating.
Apparently they have been doing more than a few block replacements, it is an extended warranty issued a few years ago on 2006-2009 Civics. Originally it was an entire new engine only for total engine failure but they extended it from 8 years to 10, unlimited mileage, for coolant leaks due to a defective block. It's a $3400 warranty claim.
