I avoid dealers like a plague, the thought of someone else working on my cars gives me the willys. Have always done my own service and maintanence including warranty work and recalls. On occasion that called for paying for parts would have been free. At least I know how the work was done and that nothing else was messed up. Dealers and indy's can have the best intentions, but to often there is an underlying level of incompetence, shysterism, and greed ready to take advantage of whomever they can. Another factor in having others do work on your car, is they have to get the job done in a timely manor, which can compromise the quality of work.
A minimalistic way to maintain a car, is to change the oil once or twice a year, change tires when worn to the wear bars, renew brakes and discs when they start grinding, do wiper blades and fluid level checks yourself, change the battery every 2 or 3 years just to be safe, and if something major happens get another car. Ideal for someone who has to park outside and has a difficulty taking pride in their car. Or for more bucks, lease, and do the same.
