We don't fuel up fossil fueled cars daily because it is a time wasting hassle.

We can easily plug in the car at home nightly. That means your wife is covered...

As far as a 200 mile commute... The Model S sedan boasts a 250 mile range in normal mode, and 300 mile range in distance mode.

Great for normal weather, but if you get bad snow that might push you to the limit...

If you have recreational trailer parks or Tesla Superchargers, or Nissan Dealerships selling the "Leaf", outdoor freestanding J1772 car chargers on the way to work/home then you have no charging issues in an emergency (as long as you have an adapter to convert the J1772 charging cable to your car's power hook-up).

If not, run a power line to the Tesla at work and charge at 12 amps at 110 Volts, to add 25 more miles to your day, (3 miles per hour of charging), as emergency insurance. You could always ask for management to make a 220 Volt 40 AMP plug available to you, and you would add over 100 miles to your day's potential commute. They may already have those outlets outside on the grounds for machinery and tool use.

If you need more distance, or need to frequently go shopping after work, then consider a Chevy Cruise and charge it nightly for 40 cheaper miles and try to charge at work for another 40.

My Tesla Roadster would not be ideal as it has about 160 actual miles per charge unless you switch to "Range Mode." That is cutting it close, unless you can charge at work at a minimum of 200 V and 12 AMPs. Unfortunately, frequent use of "Range Mode" supposedly lessens battery life.

I would talk to management about putting in an outdoor charging station, as they will get a tax credit and look great to local and state governments. Local news will also pick it up.

Best,

U2bC
