This photo is my most recent tank of gas - 1,723 miles (2013 Ford Fusion Energi). The tank capacity is 14.2 gallons. It is slightly above empty as I did not want to dry the fuel pump in this experiment. I added one additional gallon & stopped the test at when the trip meter registered just below 14.2 gallon consumed ( and 284 kWh of electricity).
Note the battery had 10 miles range left - I could have driven around to get the mileage up before refilling but I was in a hurry.
My average summer range is 25 miles & my winter range is 18 on EV only.
If you can plug in at work - even at 120volt you will be fully charged up at the end of the work day. 2X25 miles = 50 miles is a good chunk of your 78 mile round trip commute.

One thing you could do is buy a Gen 2 or 3 Toyota Prius & buy the largest after market Plug in kit - 11kWh is claimed to get you 75 miles.
Price wise you could get a Gen 3 Prius for $15K and the plug in kit for $10-12k depending on how much work you want to do. If the charge does not get you the full 75 miles then you simply burn a little gas for the last few miles.
After market vendor is called pluginsupply.
