I think Justin did the math on the electric Fiat and for them, it worked. I think it depends on your situation. I am definitely interested in the winter performance of these cars. Batteries usually do not like our winters here! I may need a new one for the 9-5 this year.
wrt Roger's question, as I understand it, highway speeds are less of a problem with electrics than accelerating to highway speeds. Cruising speed for an aerodynamic car does not require much power at all. Accelerating does, so around town and getting on the highway or stop and go would probably induce a bigger battery drain... though I suppose if one is "idling" you'd use less "fuel" in an EV than in an ice... though heat in winter would still consume power.
I am watching this with interest. Personally, the combination of low end torque of an EV with a simplified system mechanically, appeals greatly. If you live in a world where exhausts don't rust out every 2-3 years, this might not seem as exciting! The range aspect does limit the uses of an ev for us. Maybe 1 car (ice) for long haul, 1 car (ev) for commute. We need 2 anyway these days.
