We have a 9-5 wagon and bought the '13 Pathfinder new to replace our Ford Taurus X. Love it. Comfortable seats, car-like cockpit and the ride really doesn't feel too SUV-ish. We got one step down from the loaded version (SL) and it has everything we wanted (AWD, heated leather seats and towing pkg) except a sunroof. Audio is definitely so-so. Our kids (ever-growing tweens/teens) like that they can adjust the 2nd row for leg room and recline the seats. I would have loved a Jetta TDI but with the kids, their friends, the dog, hockey bags, ski gear, etc etc that's just not happening. I'm sure I would have liked the MDX but price was an issue for us. We paid $30k plus another $800 or so for an extended warranty, which I'm glad we got because I've since heard of some transmission issues. Good luck.
