Chris is right on the money as to the initial adjustment and that is fine in most cases. However, the old school really messy way is to have the engine running and turn the rocker nut out until you hear clatter, then turn it back in 3/4 of a turn (I think it's 3/4) this just centers the lifter piston in it's bore. There will be oil squirting out of the holes on the rocker arms, and there are little clips you can put on there to stop the oil squirt ( I have a set in my toolbox, have not used then in 20 some years.
