With an older car, beyond just the dollars spent for repairs and
maintenance, you may want to think about the 'cost' of not having
transportation for a couple of days. For years we made due with
a single older car, but I needed it to get to work, so it was
difficult to schedule maintenance, and I let a lot of little things
go until they got worse. Stupid, I know, but it happened. That
applies whether you do the work yourself or not (well, if it's planned
you can do your own work on the weekend). And if you only
have one car, it's tough to get parts. They almost didn't let me
on the bus with a replacement battery one day.
One old and one not so old is a good combination. Then hopefully one
always works, and you can work around scheduled maintenance.
The brand new ones are just too damn expensive, and things like
the recent jeep hacking scare worry me a lot.
