Yeah - Honda killed the S2000 because the sales numbers weren't there. The Miata has had perpetually decreasing sales since the '90s which is why having a sales partner is so important. We've got the GT86 twins (BRZ/FR-S) - and they have perpetually decreasing sales. Everybody says they want a barebones sports car, but when it comes down to traffic with a clutch, summer with no AC, unlocking doors with a key, and not having room for friends and groceries everyone backs away. Sports cars seem like a great deal until you have to choose one. I think the fact that a Nissan Altima can do 80% of what something like a GT86 can do while also being a fine daily driver doesn't hurt.
Measuring a 20,000 unit/year manufacturing commitment against a handful of classic car sales unfortunately doesn't add up. :(
