I think the first year it did okay, but now it's more of a everybody who wanted one has one situation, sales declined dramatically and are doing really badly now. It doesn't help that Toyota/Subaru haven't made any changes or done anything to generate excitement in the car, like releasing a turbo model, clube sport edition, doing a spec race series, or whatever. I think your point on the platforms is a good one; even something like the Camaro, which sells in good numbers, shares a chassis with Cadillac and engine development with the Corvette. A small sports car really needs its own chassis, and I guess even the bid dog, Mazda, feels it need to platform share to keep the Miata viable.
Regular cars really are so much better, and even an econobox corners pretty flatly these days and can be fun to drive, which does reduce the sports car appeal, but on the flip side everything is so frickin heavy now because of the platform sharing. Cars that almost fit the sports car description, like the 370Z, always end up bigger and heavier than they should be because they're on a sedan platform (still a fun car though). While not a sports car, driving something like a E30 or E36 BMW or a C900 or 9000, they just feel a lot more fun to drive, and I think a big part of that is that they're a 1000lbs lighter than modern cars.
