Most of you know that I don't mind dealing with scammers especially in order to understand the scam if it is against TSN users and to write about it. Anyway, this is not affecting TSN users but I have been getting these automated, computer voice generated calls saying that the IRS is going to file a lawsuit against me. You've probably all heard of this already, but I decided to check out what happens so I called back. They first called from a Seattle number that's posted all over the Internet (206-204-9715) and then from a Minneapolis number (612-845-4208) that wasn't found in Google. The Seattle number kept saying all circuits were busy and it seems these numbers further connect you to something international, I suspect (pause during ringing and then it resumes).
So, I called them back today and spoke to a person who seemed to have an African accent.. Anyway, I spoke to "Officer John Brown, Federal ID: 54281" who verified that there was an error on my taxes and I owed $3,590 which I had to resolve or officers would show up on my doorstep in the next 2-3 hours to arrest me. I agreed that I had to get this resolved and that I didn't want to be arrested, so he transferred me to the 'Chief Investigating Officer', who was also named John Something. He told me I needed to go to my bank to make a payment immediately and asked how far I lived from my bank. I told him about 4 miles and he said he would stay on the line while I drove there and that once I was in the parking lot, he would give me further instructions. I told him I was leaving immediately and would keep him on the line, but basically, at that point, I hung up. I then got a call back from 202-239-1002 (Wash, DC) from the same guy and I told him we must have gotten disconnected and told him I had to put the phone down since I was driving and I hung up again. This time I blocked both numbers. It's amazing how much time they put into trying to make this sound real, but the first guy was stumbling all over his script and the whole thing is soundly unprofessional even for a scam. Plus, I think people at the bank might recognize what's going on too... I don't see how this scam goes all the way to them getting any money... It's just so ridiculous and stupid, yet there they are.. this IRS scam is nothing new...
