I have fun with those guys Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Thu, 3 Mar 2016 20:00:09 In Reply to: Just as stupid as the "Microsoft tech support" calls, NCCaniac [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 3 Mar 2016 13:06:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I run Linux on all my systems so the calls from "Windows Support" are particularly ludicrous. The people calling are idiots reading from a script. Once I played along typing in the various commands the guy on the other end wanted me to run and of course none of them were working. Even when rebooting the computer and reading off bootup messages saying "Ubuntu Linux" he still didn't get it. The poor sap had to call in a "senior technician" that finally realized what was going on but it took him a little time.
Frequently those mugs use Teamviewer for their remote sessions, which is cross-platform. So I let them loose inside a Linux virtual machine set up to look similar to Windows. It's a laugh riot watching them stumble around. Sometimes they start cursing profusely, so I ask "Is that the way someone from Windows Support would talk to a customer?" [hangup]
Though if I don't have time to play, simply asking "which computer, I have several of them" results in an immediate hangup. Or I inform them I've been working in the computer industry for decades and are they sure they want to proceed. [hangup]
When I get the "IRS" calls and they say they'll have to arrest me if I don't cough up the dough, I just tell them "OK, come on out, I'll wait by the door for you." Or if I feel like it I can start asking specifics about their "case" and for some of the specific paperwork that would be involved in any such proceeding. [hangup]
It's unfortunate that anyone falls for these scams, they're very obviously ridiculous. But if you have a little time for entertainment you can yank their chains and there's nothing they can do about it.
