Yes I recall all the fanfare and hype around the market launch of the Ford Pinto and the Chevy Vega - the CEOs of both companies making outlandish statements that these models would "drive imports from America's shores" . Instead the opposite happened. My sister bought a 1st year Vega and after a winter in WNY salt the windshield pillars were rusting through. On the Pinto :

"Pinto crashes caused the death and mutilation of 900 occupants after their cars burst into flames after rear-end collisions, according to Wyden in The Unknown Iacocca.

Mother Jones, a left-wing magazine that specialized in investigative journalism, reported in its September/October 1977 issue that Ford knew - and did nothing about - pre-production crash tests that showed that rear-end collisions easily ruptured the Pinto's fuel system. "
