I think I read under 20 states, maybe 17 still have motor vehicle safety inspections, a lot more used to have them and did away with them - because most studies say they are not effective in reducing accidents and subject the unwary not car savvy owner to all sorts of possible fraud and unnecessary repairs.

I've posted previously on this subject, CO did away with these inspections many decades ago, but I moved to PA in the early 90s and was appalled when I took my Saab for the state inspection to a shop that the lady who did day car for our kids husband owned - he blantantly tried to rip me off. When I complained loudly about PA inspections in the office where I worked - people meekly rolled their eyes and said " you should have been here when inspections were required 2x a year.
Just a program that has far more ill effects on vehicle owners than positive ones, yet some states still force people to do this.
