In addition to Seattle-Boston, do some research on the rental rates at nearby cities. I'm sure you're familiar with your area... big cities with airports (which is where you get the best rates) near Boston are Manchester NH and Providence RI.
My brother and I took a road trip from San Francisco to Denver a couple of years ago. The one-way rental rates were different enough that we ended flying from SF to Las Vegas and picking the car up there, and even with the airfare the total cost was less.
