If dealer, they may be able to help, if private, it will be a mildly discomfort and annoying.
I purchased a new car from a dealer in NH (Manchester). This dealer wasn't part of the online program with MA RMV, so it necessitated a trip to the MA RMV is Lowell with bill of sale and insurance binder. Would have been easy except at last minute, I added my wife's name and had to wait for the updated insurance binder. Fortunately, my insurance company is online with the State, but it still took a few hours. Also adding to the angst, it was Friday afternoon and the prospect of being stuck (my car was in Boston, took a bus to Manchester to eliminate having 2 cars to drive back) was unsettling.
Other than a trailer, unless you want to chance it, you need to have a valid plate. Needless to say, your car will end up in a tow lot (added $$ every day) if the police stop you.
Have you tried RMV (online)? NC's RMV looks scarey, but I guess no worse than MA. With the bill of sale, proof of insurance and the RMV-1 form, you'll have your properly registered plates and won't have to be looking in the rear view mirror.

good luck
