A co-worker who appears to be of an age similar to me, age 62, both had the identical comment recently on HF tools. At our rapidly approaching retirement age, every new tool we buy 'may' become a single use tool. Why spend big money on the best quality tool, even sales prices, when there is a good chance the tool will only be used a half dozen times or less.
I bought a pretty full set of 1/2-inch drive deep metric impact sockets in January of 2017 for a non-SAAB suspension replacement project. Checked multiple local discount tool source stores and got them at O'Reilly's for $25-$30. A similar Kobalt set at Lowes was $60 this weekend. It might have had one additional socket. Haven't used them since that one project.
I bought a Porter-Cable electric plane, on deep sale, 3 years ago for a job on our youngest son's home in Michigan. I used it again this summer on the same son's current home in PA. Only two uses for this tool.
I bought a Ryobi cordless hammer-drill/driver this summer, also on deep sale, for a specific job on the PA house. Used it again this past weekend for a project at the same PA home, but as things worked out a regular drill/driver would have been sufficient.
I have used the daylights out of my AEG cordless drill/driver. Got it 30-35 years ago when AEG was still making quality tools. Apparently AEG is now made by the same Asian company that makes Rigid brand hand tools so AEG quality is good again, but for a while their reputation was in the dumpster.
