Selling old car to out-of-state buyer Posted by ELaw [Email] (#699) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ELaw) on Sun, 22 Sep 2019 07:43:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hello all!
I have an old Audi for sale, and I've gotten inquiries from a number of out-of-state buyers. I'm curious what people do with regard to the car's title in that situation. I live in MA if it makes any difference.
Let me explain... my understanding is that when someone buys a car from you, until they title the car in their name, you are legally considered its owner. If a buyer doesn't title the car in their name and does something, for example, that gets the car impounded, you're on the hook for the impound fees etc. (that's actually happened to me).
The solution when you sell a car to a local buyer is they pay you, you give them the title, they go to the DMV and get the car titled in their name, and when they prove that has been done, you give them the car itself.
But that's not practical when someone from a state far away is the buyer. Such a buyer is going to expect to show up, test-drive the car, and if they like it, pay and leave with the signed title and the car itself. Which could create a problem as I describe above - especially if the buyer lives in a state that does not issue titles to older cars, as is sometimes the case (the car I'm selling is 30 years old).
So I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas how to handle this situation?
Thanks!
